MINUTES
CASCADE TOWNSHIP LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
Monday, October 14, 2002
7:00 P.M.
All members were present except Marianne Warnock.
Charles Fry opened the meeting with introductions. Future meetings
are scheduled for the second Monday each month. Everyone was given a
copy of the current membership list and the Expansion Study and
Preliminary Plan Information Package.
A discussion and review of the Expansion Study was held. Additional
reports of available meeting space in the public schools and other
commercial buildings as well as a parking space analysis will be added
to the information package as they are completed.
Phil Davis, Architect, related how the library will need more space
as time passes. Current design population equates to 34,334. This
represents an additional 20,000 non-township residents using the
facilities. Phil responded to the question of his vision for libraries
of the future by stressing the potential for more electronic access,
training in technology, and providing a flexible tool for the future.
Patrons are expecting more services now.
Charles posed the question of where an addition could be built.
Much of the property behind and beside the library is unsuitable for
construction. The parcel at the corner of 28th Street and
Thornbook has been slated for the new fire station. If a new township
hall were built it would share parking with the library. There is
really only one direction for building expansion to the south and
east.
Mary Carpenter spoke regarding the Historical Society space needs.
She related several Historical Society members visited other
libraries. A historical museum will not be open to the public at all
times and multiple use of space should be considered.
With the Friends of the Library membership numbering upwards of
350, the space designated as "Café" will be needed for a perpetual
book sale. The kitchen will be a catering area for food warming and
coffee only. Space can be sub-divided and tailored to fit the
activity. A dumbwaiter will serve as an efficient way to move books
between levels. In order to utilize the lower level for book sales an
additional stairway is required.
The new addition will have a separate entrance.
Ed Dupke questioned how a deficit of 3000+ square feet by the year
2020 would be accounted for. This shortfall is overall library space
not just program space. A discussion was held considering how those
needs could be included in current expansion plans.
Ron Goodyke commented that most of the residents have a vision of
how spacious the library is now. It is very difficult to see 20 years
into the future. The overcrowding is not seen by all. There is a need
to define future use.
The primary purpose is to take care of library needs. The Township
Board must be interested enough to spend some time listening and
educating themselves about the needs.
Charles Fry asked the question "What’s next?" He suggested a visit
to the Wyoming Library. A time and date will be established for anyone
interested in going along.
Lynne Quinlan, Phil and Charles will prepare a program to present
to the Township Board sub-committee. The next Advisory Board meeting
will be a trial run for the program.
The next meeting is scheduled for November 11th, 7:00 –
9:00 p.m.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Jeanie Neve
